Rogers Smart Community x UBC Customer Showroom
Immersive experiences for connected living technologies.
Rogers Design Internship
Overview
In partnership with UBC, we were developing a Rogers Smart Communities (RSC) showroom to demonstrate next-generation connected living experiences. The showroom targets property managers and developers looking to transform their buildings with Rogers-enabled smart products to increase property value. This space is part of a larger UBC living lab project that includes product deployment in a UBC residence building and a shared environment to analyze building usage and utilities data.
Problem
My role in this project was to do initial scoping of the showroom space to map visitor circulation, and to design idle/active screens to display during customer interactions with the Rogers Smart Communities suite of products.
Process
I conducted research on existing showroom experiences to success criteria to drive customer engagement, drawing inspiration and insights from tech stores (e.g. Apple, Dyson, Google) and museum exhibits and installations.
Including a strong call to action encourages visitor interaction and improves flow.
Providing minimal, focused instructions and essential product information prevents cognitive overload and maintains user attention longer.
Showcases for interconnected products (e.g., Google Nest) succeed by immersing visitors through cohesive narrative and ecosystem storytelling.
Anchor the showroom design in RSC's core value proposition, similar to how Dyson highlights its sophisticated engineering through sleek exploded diagrams of their products’ inner workings.
Tailor the experience to specific customer segments to clearly demonstrate how the RSC product suite addresses their unique needs and pain points.
Collaborating with another interaction designer, we began space planning. We were constrained by the limited space we were allocated in the UBC ICICS building, so we decided on three different zones and mapped the visitor circulation through them.

Zone 1: Smart Community Hardware Gallery
Guided by Rogers sales representatives, visitors explore connected home products. Physical interaction with a product is detected by a sensor and triggers the display screen to show key features and explain how it integrates within the broader ecosystem.
Zone 2: Community Intelligence
Visitors explore an interactive model of the UBC residence building with deployed RSC products, toggling through customer segment-specific views to see how data is collected and utilized for parking, building operations, and utilities management.
Zone 3: Foundational Technologies
An interactive timeline highlighting innovative Rogers 5G network applications and real-world problem-solving across industries.
My role was in designing the digital experience flow for Zone 1.
After gathering inspiration for the display screens, I presented an initial set of exploratory concepts and prototype screens to establish requirements and refine the visual direction.
An interactive toggle graphic that reflects real-time status changes (e.g., locking a door) when visitors engage with physical products on the gallery wall.

After review of the initial screens with the sales team, we decided to make the following changes:
Following the fifth key insight from our research about information overload, reduce the amount of non-essential information on each screen to prevent information overload and keep the visitor engaged.
Align the idle screen with RSC's core positioning as a leader in connected living.
Highlight operational use cases and management controls alongside user-facing product features for property managers and developers.
I originally chose dark backgrounds for a sleek look, inspired by tech brands like Dyson. After discussions, we agreed that a light background would provide more visual clarity for audiences and a more optimistic/positive feel of the RSC connected living message.
The second iteration of display designs includes the full flows for each product, an idle welcome screen, and the prototyped interactive, interconnected experience.

Results
My work was handed off to the RSC team to continue developing, including the copy for the hardware gallery screens continuing to be refined to convey a strong RSC message and value proposition for customers.
The impact of my work:
Showroom experience research insights were applied to and helped inform the RSC showroom vision, enhancing the sales journey.
Supported stakeholder decision-making through user-centered design concepts, visitor flow mapping, and interactive experience prototypes.
Provided reusable design assets and experience frameworks that help guide ongoing development of the RSC customer showroom.
Retrospective
With this project, I moved beyond designing for purely digital and designed an entire spatial experience, having to consider user interactions with physical products and the circulation of users within the space over time. I walked away from this project with a more holistic perspective on experience design, and newfound interest for experiential design beyond just digital screens.
I also learned that well-crafted interview questions lead to richer insights and more actionable stakeholder feedback. People provide more meaningful feedback when ideas are communicated through tangible, interactive, and highly visual storytelling experiences.
